We at the Accurso clinic want to make your first visit with us a pleasant experience.
Please be on time; if you are not seen within 20 minutes of your scheduled appointment there will be no charge for the visit. The purpose of this web page is an attempt to describe what we do and what we do not do so that you can make a clear decision as whether or not to call our office for an appointment. Our office is not for everyone (i.e.: we do not accept patients who are sent by attorneys).
First of all, there are different types of chiropractic practices; different approaches (philosophies). We are a chiropractic office whose purpose is to determine if subluxation (a misalignment that causes nerve pressure) is present in your spine. If present we attempt to develop a direct strategy to correct the misalignment as quickly as possible. Dr. Accurso’s adjustments are painless and his results are excellent. He was voted, by his colleagues, Chiropractor of the Year in Florida twice in his career.
If the cause of your misalignment (subluxation) appears to be correctible, then we will work to correct it. If you understand your responsibilities you should obtain fine results rapidly, inexpensively, and often quite permanently.

DR. ACCURSO’S BIOGRAPHY
I was born in Elmhurst, Queens, New York. Both my parents were Italian; Dad was born in a small town south of Palermo Sicily. Mom’s family is from a small town North of Rome known as Acua Santa.
I am the only son in our family. I have three sisters, Angie, Peggy and Margaret.
I was married to Ellen Medley of Owensboro Kentucky for 36 wonderful years. We have four children who look and act almost normal; they are all chiropractors. Two of my children, Joe III and Amy practice in Miami, Jenny practices in Virginia and Ali practices in Barcelona, Spain. I have 2 grandsons from Amy and they are magnificent and good looking like me.
My wife, Vesna Markovic Accurso, and I live in South Miami, just off of Ludlam Road and Hardie Road. She has three children, Tiana, Ivan and Fernando. Fernando is 14 years old and of course lives with us at home. He attends South Miami Middle School and hopes to grow up to be a dictator of a small third world island in the Caribbean.
We have three pets. Lua, a big blonde Labrador retriever who is self centered and is like another child to us. We have two young cats, Vinny and Pepper who think Lua is just tops.
My goals: To be discovered by Hollywood and become the next Brad Pitt or Mat Damon (who has been a patient in the office when he is in town). So if you have friends or family in show business tell them that I want to be a movie star. (Please).
HOW AND WHY DR. ACCURSO BECAME A CHIROPRACTOR!
Because of a minor neck injury to my neck, while participating in sports at Coral Gables High School, I began to suffer from throat infections on and off for 4 years. I was either sick with tonsillitis or just recovering from tonsillitis.
Our mom and dad actually believed that when we had an infection, we had two choices: Take antibiotics or probably die! Seriously. As a family, we believed that tonsillitis with fever would probably lead to death if not treated with antibiotics!
My mother and father did not want me to die so I ‘got a shot’. (And the fever went away and I felt better in a day or two). But it never cured the cause of the infections. The infections returned five to six times a year.
Our family used a chiropractor – my father did – for migraine headaches. But not for other health matters. Dad thought “you needed pharmaceuticals when sick.” He thought “chiropractors were back and headache doctors”.
The shots went on and on. I had a tremendous fear of dying from the infection and fever. My fear would almost paralyze me. The fear in my mind and heart lowered my internal resistance even more and made me even sicker! Fear weakens our immune system.
During my late teens, while attending the premedical curriculum at the University of Miami (1960-64) the throat infections worsened. My throat became so swollen that at times, I could barely sip water. The fevers were going higher than 105 degrees. The antibiotics would give me temporary relief as usual. But I was losing weight rapidly and surgery was scheduled because of the infections. My lymph glands and tonsils were the size of walnuts.
It was then that an old schoolmate of mine, Brian Logan, suggested to my father that I be seen by a chiropractor. Well, the chiropractor got my father’s attention and my father figured ‘what the hell – let’s give chiropractic a try, the medical doctors were costing me a fortune and now they want to cut out my son’s tonsils!” The year was 1962 or 1963. I thought chiropractors were a joke. I really believed that the brain and spine had nothing to do with health!! A pinched nerve in the neck could never be the cause of infections! (The medical doctors ignored the nervous system))
I was brought to Dr. Florencio Reyes in Miami. “Dr. Flo” x-rayed my spine. He sat my father and I down and pointed to the x-ray of my lower neck. THEN he had the audacity to tell me and my dad that the cause of almost five years of infections was a bone pressing on the neck nerves to the tonsils. The medical doctors never mentioned the nerve interference to the tonsils could lower the resistance to the tonsils and allow infections to settle in.
How could the chiropractor find what all the medical doctors had missed?! But I knew from my University of Miami classes in anatomy and physiology that the brain and nerve system controlled the glands and organs but it was never even hinted that the immune system was controlled by the brain!!
But I believed only what the medical specialists said. So I still thought the chiropractor was nuts. And I told him so. My father, being the sweet old fashioned Sicilian man that he was, said to me: “Joey, I am paying for six months of adjustments in advance (as he slowly counted out $900 in $50’s)! If you miss one appointment I will knock your head against the wall like a coconut!” (those were his words). I didn’t miss any appointments.
In 6 months, my long standing infections and fevers disappeared. The before and after x-rays showed a big change in the position of the vertebrae. This made all the difference in my life, the lives of my children, and the lives of thousands of practice members I have had the honor to work with.
